Barrett Ruud, Nebraska Inside Linebackers Coach

Matt Rhule

Head Coach

Matt Rhule was hired as Nebraska’s 31st head coach on Nov. 26, 2022. Rhule brings 10 years of head coaching experience into his first season at Nebraska, having previously served as head coach of the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League with successful collegiate stints leading the programs at Baylor and Temple.

The 2023 season will mark Rhule’s 11th season as a head coach and his 26th season as a full-time coach. Highly regarded as a program builder and player developer, Rhule brings a proven track record of collegiate success to Lincoln.

Marcus Satterfield

Offensive Coordinator

Marcus Satterfield is in his first season as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator, bringing 24 years of experience to the Husker sideline. Satterfield is in his seventh season serving on Matt Rhule’s staff in 2023, having coached under Rhule with the Carolina Panthers and at Baylor and Temple. Satterfield was previously Rhule’s offensive coordinator for three seasons at Temple.

Satterfield is in his 12th season as an offensive coordinator in 2023 and his 25th season overall. In addition to previous experience as a coordinator, Satterfield also served as the head coach of Tennessee Tech for two seasons in 2016 and 2017.

Tony White

Defensive Coordinator

Tony White is in his first season as Nebraska’s defensive coordinator in 2023. White came to Lincoln after previously serving as the defensive coordinator at Syracuse.

In his 17th season of coaching, White boasts previous Power Five experience at Syracuse, Arizona State and UCLA. White is in his fourth season as a defensive coordinator in 2023, and he held the title of interim defensive coordinator and defensive passing game coordinator at Arizona State and recruiting coordinator at San Diego State. White also spent one season as a high school head coach.

Ed Foley

Special Teams Coordinator

With more than three decades of coaching experience, Ed Foley brings a diverse and robust resume to his first season as Nebraska’s special teams coordinator. Foley has served on Matt Rhule’s staff for nine of Rhule’s 11 seasons as a head coach, including each of the last five seasons.

Foley boasts a wealth of experience, including stints as a collegiate head coach and an NFL assistant. He is an accomplished special teams coach and possesses strong recruiting ties to the Northeast with specific success recruiting New Jersey, which has produced some of the greatest players in Nebraska history. In Foley’s 11 seasons at Temple, more than 20 Owls who played high school football in New Jersey went on to NFL careers.

E.J. Barthel

Running Backs

E.J. Barthel in his in first season as Nebraska’s running backs coach. Barthel is in his fourth season on Matt Rhule’s staff, having previously coached under Rhule with the Carolina Panthers and at Temple.

Barthel is in his 10th season of coaching in 2023, and he has put together a diverse resume having served in recruiting and player development roles in addition to being a running backs coach. Barthel has previous Big Ten experience at Rutgers and Penn State, and he coached for two seasons in the National Football League.

 
 

Evan Cooper

Secondary

Evan Cooper is in his first season as Nebraska’s secondary coach in 2023. Cooper played at Temple when Matt Rhule was an assistant coach, and Cooper is serving on Rhule’s coaching staff for the 11th consecutive season in 2023.

Cooper has built an impressive resume in a little more than a decade. He spent three seasons as an assistant in the National Football League and has previous Power Five experience as an assistant coach at Baylor. Cooper also has a background in player evaluation and development. In addition to his role as an assistant coach, Cooper served as the Carolina Panthers’ director of player evaluation for three seasons, and he was previously the director of player personnel at Baylor and Temple and an assistant director of player personnel at Miami.

 
 
 
 

Terrence Knighton

Defensive Line

Terrance Knighton is in his fifth season of coaching in 2023 following an outstanding NFL career. He is serving on Matt Rhule’s staff for the third consecutive season, after Knighton was an assistant defensive line coach with the Carolina Panthers in 2021 and 2022.

In his brief coaching career Knighton has already served as a both a collegiate and NFL assistant, spending two seasons at Wagner before joining the Panthers. He will coach the defensive line for the fifth straight season in 2023. Knighton was a standout defensive lineman at Temple and went on to be a third-round NFL Draft pick. He played in more than 100 games during his seven-year professional career. Knighton tallied 231 tackles from 2009 to 2015, ranking in the top 15 of all NFL defensive tackles during that time frame.

 
 

 

Donovan Raiola

Offensive Line

Donovan Raiola is in his second season as Nebraska’s offensive line coach in 2023 after being retained by Head Coach Matt Rhule. Raiola owns 12 years of coaching experience, including four years as an offensive line coach in the National Football League.

An All-Big Ten center at Wisconsin from 2003 to 2005, Raiola began his coaching career in his home state of Hawaii in 2012. He joined Notre Dame as a graduate assistant in 2015 and served as the assistant offensive line coach with the Chicago Bears from 2018 to 2021. Raiola is the younger brother for former Husker All-American and Rimington Trophy winner Dominic Raiola.
